Here’s a photo of me leading a song at the Portland Pub & Chantey Sing,
February 24th of 2020, taken by one of the guests.
We sat there in the dark, each impatient for our turn,
Yet we did not know the words, nor had we learned the tune --
Some would rise and fall, some showed no concern;
We were young but daily growing.
There were no easy answers, no whispers in the night,
Yet we had the strength within us, the strength to get it right;
And though we had no leaders to guide us to the light,
We were young but daily growing.
We marched and sang together, who knew where we were bound?
Yet we knew our cause was just, who could us all confound?
If I were back there now, would I dare to lead this round?
We were young but daily growing.
Now our time is drawing near, and yet the work remains,
May another generation, step up to the game,
And may your songs ring truly, and shelter you from pain,
You are young but daily growing. (2X)
Here’s a song I composed which started as a sardonic comment on open-mic nights and then evolved to something more philosophical.
